Make Your Rental Right for You (Without Permanent Changes!)

Make your rental right for you without permanent change

Holy City Hydroshine does more than provide residential and commercial exterior cleaning services. The blog is also a great place for wisdom and insight on a range of topics. With this in mind, today’s post is all about how to make your leased space your own without losing your security deposit.

Customizing Your Rental Is A Challenge

One of the greatest challenges to renters is customization. After all, you can’t simply knock out a wall if you need a larger bedroom. But, there are many different ways that you can accommodate your family's wants and needs without permanently or irreversibly altering the structure.

The first step here is to decide how you will use your rental. For most of us, this means living and working.

A Cozy Home

You obviously live in your rental. But, that doesn’t mean that it’s perfect for your family. If you don’t have enough bedrooms, for example, you’ll have to figure out how to make sure everyone has a sleeping space. Something to keep in mind here is that you’re typically allowed up to three adults or two adults plus dependent children per each of your dwelling’s bedrooms. So, if you have a two-bedroom apartment, and need to accommodate three children in a single space, you'll need to get creative.

You might, for example, invest in bunk beds or a murphy bed, which House Beautiful explains are beds that can be folded up when not in use. You can even use peel and stick wallpaper or adhesive flooring to give each section of the kids’ bedroom its own personality. Ikea also recommends using curtains to visually divide your space.

A Productive Office

If you are, like many of us these days, working from home, you may also find that your apartment must become your workplace as well. This might be a bit tricky, particularly if you don’t have a lot of space or if you will be entertaining clients.

A great choice here is to redecorate your current home office, which includes choosing office furniture. If you’re looking to save money, don’t go out and buy new pieces; instead hire a professional upholstery repair company. Have a sofa in storage? You may only spend around $1,800 to reupholster it. Do keep in mind here, however, that upholstery can run up to $3,500 if you choose an expensive fabric or want to integrate custom elements. Before you choose a company, read online reviews and compare pricing. You can also save by sanding, staining, and sealing an old dining table to use as a conference table.

Something else to do for your home office is to soundproof the walls. The quickest way that you can do this is to simply add a second layer of drywall. You don’t have to go over the entire wall, and you can trim it out using crown molding material. If it looks a little off, paint a mural on it, and you will have an instant piece of art that also helps you keep focused when other people are in your condo or apartment.

A Refreshed Exterior

Nothing beats cleaning the exterior of your home to not just boost curb appeal, but make you feel good about coming and going. A clean home is a happy home, and perhaps this begins with the outside. Spruce up the yard and outdoor areas with fresh mulch around your plants, shrubs, and trees, and add a few decorative planters to display on the front porch or out back on the deck. And make your hardscapes, pavers, and sidewalk pop with a good cleaning. Holy City Hydroshine can provide house, patio and driveway cleaning services to add a professional touch.

There are many ways that you can customize your rented space without causing permanent damage. Many of the above tips, even adding a second layer of drywall, are easy to change when it’s time to move. If you’re not sure what you can and can’t do, talk to your landlord. You may find that most are more than happy to let you make small tweaks, such as painting or changing out kitchen hardware, that help you feel more at home.
